about

This album is/was a Song-A-Day project made as a challenge between friends. This one being the 3rd annual "Write A Song A Day In The Month Of May". Shoutouts to Mike Villata (linelions) and Louie Aronowitz (Subtweets) for turning me on to this idea in the first place.

In writing this album I didn't realize how many reference jabs I'd be making at the current state of the world-- the pandemic, quarantining, social distancing n’ all that. The previous record, 'Apocalypse, Right Now?!',--still in progress-- is/was intended to address the COVID-19 pandemic from the start. The only difference here for 'Song-a-Day' is that these themes come out in the songwriting process more or less unintended. The spontaneity of it all being half the fun. Most of these songs were written in about 10 mins!

Sadly, this May has also seen its share of passings, so I wanted to pay tribute to them here, and some who have directly influenced a few of these songs:

Firstly, I’d like to take a moment here to recognize the injustice done to George Floyd, R.I.P., who was murdered by some shitty cops.

R.I.P. Millie Small, Florian Schneider (Kraftwerk), Little Richard, Paul Vasquez (aka “the Double Rainbow guy"), Jerry Stiller, and Phil May (the Pretty Things).

As well as some honorable mentions who have also shaped this record: David Bowie (I Think this One’s on Fire), Joey Ramone (I Wanna Find the One), Joni James (Ode to Old Records, Joni), John Prine (just in general), and Gabby Pahinui (Red Moon).

Heavy 20’s Jazz influences this time ‘round goes to Ruth Etting, The Boswell Sisters, and of course Annette Hanshaw (“That’s all!”)

There are also some other obvious influences from people who are still alive and well so I’ll just leave those to you, the listener, to find out for yourselves. Enjoy!

And last, but not least, ''Neath the Trees Where the Dogwood Bloom' is dedicated to my grandpa who would have been 105 years old on Memorial Day. Borne in 1915, our family had a somewhat of a history having dogwood trees in our yards. Maybe you have one in yours.

Best,
Chris
